If you are a San Juan Island resident who’s never had a SJLIB card, you may apply for an eCard HERE and receive access to our Virtual Library, including ebooks, audiobooks, and online resources.

You can use your card to borrow books, DVDs, and other items, including our Library of Things and Virtual Library access.

Return physical materials in our 24/7 book drops or in person during open hours.

Borrowing from our Virtual Library? You can borrow up to 5 items at a time (and place 8 items on hold at a time) on Libby and up to 5 items/month on hoopla.

Items from our Virtual Library are automatically returned when due.

Your Library account gives you access to library information online. Use your account to:

    • See when your items are due and view if you have overdue items
    • Place holds on items you want to borrow
    • Pause your holds when you are out-of-town or on vacation
    • Renew available items
    • View any charges on your account
    • See if any items on hold are ready for pick up
    • Keep track of your borrowing history (opt-in to enable)

A PIN (Personal Identification Number) is a four-digit number assigned to you when you register for your library card to protect your account.

Be sure to keep your PIN private. To reset your pin, call, email, or visit the Library.

Your PIN is often required to access the Virtual Library.

Yes! Curbside pickup is available during open library hours.

Step 1: Search the library catalog for the title you want.

Step 2: Select the Place Hold option next to the item you are interested in and enter your library card number and PIN.

Step 3: Once you receive notification (by email, text, or phone) that your item is available, head to the Library during open hours and pick up your item at the front desk. (You have 7 days to pick up your held item before it is returned to circulation for other patrons to borrow.)

Your materials automatically renew two times if no one else is waiting for your checked out items. If we cannot renew an item, we will notify you when it is overdue.

We do not charge daily late fees, so there is no cost for keeping something a few days late; however, we are a community resource so please return items in a timely manner if possible.

As part of our commitment to equity and access, we try to remove any barriers to library use. Many other major library systems have eliminated late fines, including Chicago, San Francisco, Denver, Sno-Isle, Kitsap, and Spokane.

If you lose or damage an item please visit or contact the Library to let us know. A staff member will work with you to assess replacement fees. Any items 30 days overdue or more will result in a temporary account suspension until they are returned.

If you are experiencing financial hardship or an extenuating circumstance, please reach out so that we can do our best to help.

Yes, we proctor exams free of charge. Contact the Library at least two weeks in advance to make an appointment. Please note that exam proctoring is subject to staff availability.
