tech use at the library

The San Juan Island Library has the following equipment available for public use: 

Computers with access to the library catalog and research databases.

  • Computers with access to the internet and Microsoft Suite
  • Black and white printer (10 cents per page)
  • Black and white copying (10 cents per page)
  • 3D Printer

Patrons with a San Juan Island Library card may use a public access computer to access the internet.

 

Visitors without a library card may use a guest pass. 

 

You can reserve a computer for same day use. 

 

Internet users must observe the library’s Internet Use Policy. 

We are pleased to offer 24/7 wireless access in the library building and on library grounds. 

  • Not guaranteed to be secure; patrons use at their own risk. 
  • The Library cannot guarantee speed or quality of the wireless network. 
  • The wireless network cannot be used for illegal purposes; for the distribution of materials using peer-to-peer applications; nor in any other way that violates the Library’s Internet Use Policy , Rules of Conduct, or other applicable Library policy. Devices used for such activities may be blocked from the network. 

 

To connect to WiFi:

Most wireless devices have a utility for discovering and connecting to wireless networks; this is the preferred method. 

    • Network name: SJ Library Open Wifi
    • No password is required

All public access computers have a folder on the desktop called Accessibility Tools, which contains the following programs: 

  • Magnifier: a display utility that makes the screen more readable for people with low vision. 
  • Narrator: a text-to-speech utility for people who are blind or have low vision. 
  • On-Screen Keyboard: an accessibility utility that displays a virtual keyboard on the screen that allows people with mobility impairments to type data by using a pointing device.
The San Juan Island Library is pleased to offer a Dremel Digilab 3D printer for public printing.  Printing is available on a first-come, first-served basis and scheduled according to staff availability.  Cost: A non-refundable $1.00 fee must be paid upon submission. If the print job takes more than one hour, an additional cost may be charged. Requirements: 
  • Designs must be submitted in .stl format and are allowed in one color.
  • All print jobs must fit within 25.2 L x 19.9 W x 15.0 H centimeters OR 9.9 L x 7.8 W x 5.9 H inches.
  • The Library will view all files in authorized software before printing to determine printing feasibility. 
  • Patrons may submit up to four print jobs per month.
